CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Captain Reinard turned the ship's helm hard about causing The Black Eel to heel dangerously. Liliath held tightly to the railing on the helm platform, and she hadnât connected the safety riggings as she had before.
Mercat gave her a watchful eye. Mercat was holding on to the railing too but a little more gracefully. Saltwater, ocean spray, caught them both in the face as the ship recentered and balanced and their course-corrected about to intercept the frigate.
âMister Vick!â yelled Reinard. âHave the men trim the bow sail or lash them!â Mister Vick nodded and ran towards sailors on the deck and barked orders. Four sailors jumped and moved in unison.
âWhat would you have me do once we make contact with the frigate, Regent?â asked Reinard.
âI will negotiate with the ship's captain -- trust your regent,â said Liliath. She motioned for Mercat and she came towards her.
âIf I go aboard that ship, find a way to follow me,â Liliath whispered privately to Mercat.
âAs you wish,â said Mercat quietly.
âReinard,â said Liliath. âCan you have the ship run parallel with the frigate and in boarding range?â
âAye but it will put us vulnerable,â said the captain.
âTrust your regent, blood witch that she is,â said Liliath.
Reinard looked hard at her and gave her a solitary nod.
Both ships closed the distance rapidly. The captain had ordered Mister Vick to put the men on alert. Soon the drummer sounded the order. The soldiers were stationed at their battle stations. Though being a light vessel they assumed they were outnumbered at least five to one.
The frigate came within closing distance.
âDrop anchor and trim the sails Mister Vick,â ordered the captain. Mister Vick hesitated and looked back at the captain. âDamn it -- man, that was an order.â
âYes my captain,â said the first mate. And blew his flute causing the drummer to drum the command for dropping anchor. They were vulnerable to boarding.
The large Viclog sailing vessel came close to their light vessel and boarding hooks were thrown one after another and the two ships were pulled together.
âPrepare to be boarded!â yelled a loud voice from the frigate, assumably their first mate.
Within minutes the ship was full of the Viclog crew, The men were dressed barbarously armed with hand axes and battle axes and sailing javelins and spears. Many of them with scars on their faces and arms and chest. Most were bare-chested, many with dwarven-style tattoos on their faces and arms and chest. Sixty men came aboard. Then two figures appeared wearing more dignified clothes, one of the men was wearing a black heavy sailing coat with a golden insignia on his shoulder. He was wearing a gaudy captain's uniform with a white shirt beneath the coat and red sash around his waist and white leggings and black boots. Unlike the Dalantians, Melborians, or the Valorians, the Viclogens did not use swords. They prefered axes and hammers and sometimes spears. The captain carried a light axe with a long handle. It looked more ornamental than practical, while his crew carried heavy fierce weapons that looked well used and dented and scratched.
